What to know about flex fuel vans & minivans

Chrysler was the first to put a flex fuel minivan on the road — the 1998 Town & Country and Voyager with the 3.3L V6 — and it stuck with the idea longer than anyone. Every 2011–2020 Grand Caravan and 2011–2016 Town & Country with the 3.6L Pentastar V6 is E85-capable, which makes them the most plentiful flex fuel family vehicles on the used market. The 2011–2013 Volkswagen Routan is mechanically the same van.

GM's short-lived minivans — the Chevrolet Uplander, Buick Terraza, Pontiac Montana SV6 (sold in Canada and Mexico) and Saturn Relay — were all flex fuel for a model year or two around 2006–2008.

On the commercial side, flex fuel was aimed squarely at fleets. Ford kept the full-size Transit E85-capable from launch through the 2025 model year before dropping it for 2026, and the smaller Transit Connect was certified from 2016 to 2022, often without any badge. The V8 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana were FFVs from 2007 to 2016.

Before you buy or fill up

Cargo vans are frequently unbadged — rely on the fuel-door label and the VIN, not exterior emblems.
High-mileage fleet vans that ran E85 regularly should have had fuel filters changed on schedule; ask for records.
A loaded van on E85 has shorter range, so check station coverage along regular routes.
