Factory FFV models

Jeep's factory flex-fuel history is narrower than many owners realize. Only two Jeep models have ever shipped as U.S. factory FFVs: the Grand Cherokee and the short-lived Commander. The first Jeep FFVs arrived in 2007 with the 4.7L V8 in both the Grand Cherokee (WK platform) and Commander. When Jeep redesigned the Grand Cherokee as the 2011 WK2, it switched to the 3.6L Pentastar V6 and retained factory FFV status through model year 2014. When Stellantis revised the Pentastar for 2016, Grand Cherokee flex-fuel capability ended and never returned. The 5.7L HEMI and 6.4L SRT HEMI in Grand Cherokee were never factory FFVs.

Crucially, the Wrangler has never been a factory flex-fuel vehicle in the U.S., even when it shared the 3.6L Pentastar V6 with FFV-rated Chrysler products — Jeep did not fit the Wrangler with the ethanol-compatible fuel lines, seals, or injectors, and the Wrangler owner's manual explicitly prohibits E85. The Cherokee (KL), Patriot, Compass, Liberty, Renegade, and Gladiator have likewise never been factory FFVs. Jeep offers no flex-fuel vehicles for model year 2026.

Jeep-specific E85 tips

Grand Cherokee FFV years are very specific.

The factory flex-fuel Grand Cherokees are 2007–2009 (4.7L V8 WK) and 2011–2014 (3.6L ERB Pentastar V6 WK2). From 2015 onward, Grand Cherokees either lost FFV capability or never had it. When shopping used, confirm the exact year and engine — trim level is not enough.

Wrangler E85 is aftermarket only.

Because the JK and JL Wrangler share the 3.6L Pentastar with Chrysler FFVs, owners sometimes assume the Wrangler is flex-fuel. It is not. The Wrangler's fuel-system hardware is different from the FFV Pentastar applications, and running E85 risks warranty denial plus real hardware damage. Flex-fuel Wrangler capability requires an aftermarket kit and retuning.

HEMI Grand Cherokees are not FFVs.

The 5.7L HEMI (Limited, Overland) and 6.4L SRT HEMI in Grand Cherokee have never been factory flex-fuel engines. If you want a V8 Jeep that runs E85 from the factory, the 2007–2009 4.7L is your only option.

Jeep FFVs share VIN codes with Dodge and Chrysler cousins.

The 4.7L V8 FFV carries VIN 8th-character "P" across Grand Cherokee, Commander, Durango, Dakota, and Aspen. Use the NHTSA decoder if there is any doubt, especially on older WK Grand Cherokees where the yellow gas cap may have been swapped out over the years.
