Sheetz Territory: E85 Done Right

Pennsylvania operates 222 E85 stations, ranking among the top 15 states nationally. This success stems almost entirely from Sheetz, the Altoona-based convenience store chain that pioneered E85 retail in the state starting in 2006.

Why E85 in Pennsylvania

Retail infrastructure—not production—drives Pennsylvania's E85 success. Sheetz's corporate commitment to alternative fuels has created one of the strongest E85 networks in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Ethanol Production

Pennsylvania's single ethanol plant, Pennsylvania Grain Processing (PGP) in Clearfield, produces 110 million gallons annually from 40 million bushels of corn. The facility also produces 4 million gallons of corn oil and 330,000 tons of distillers grains.

State Incentives

The Alternative Fuels Incentive Grant (AFIG) Program offers approximately $5 million annually for alternative fuel projects, with maximum awards of $500,000 per applicant. Recent AFIG awards totaled $3.47 million across 17 counties.

Where to Find E85

Sheetz is Pennsylvania's E85 champion with 375+ locations offering E85 across PA, WV, VA, MD, OH, and NC. The chain partnered with GM and VeraSun for initial rollout. GetGo (Giant Eagle) operates ~270 locations with E85 in Pittsburgh. Wawa offers E85 at select eastern Pennsylvania locations. Royal Farms is expanding E85 availability.

Coverage Gaps

Rural northern tier counties (Tioga, Potter, McKean) have sparse coverage. Overall, Pennsylvania's E85 network provides reliable coverage across most regions.

Pricing Context

E85 typically runs $0.50-$0.70/gallon less than regular gasoline. Sheetz promotions have offered E85 as low as $0.85-$1.85/gallon.

Practical Tips

Look for Sheetz first—they're your most reliable E85 source. GetGo stations provide excellent western PA coverage. Pennsylvania borders Ohio (285 stations) and New York (77 stations) for cross-state options.
