Pacific Northwest E85 Pioneer Struggles

Oregon has just 6 public E85 stations—among the lowest in the nation—despite progressive clean fuel policies. High transportation costs from the Midwest have constrained E85 growth.

Why E85 in Oregon

Oregon's distance from the Corn Belt means all additional ethanol must be transported over 1,500 miles. A 108-million-gallon plant in Clatskanie filed bankruptcy just seven months after opening in 2008. The state's record corn harvest barely reached 15.7 million bushels—compared to Iowa's 2+ billion.

Ethanol Production

Oregon produces only 40 million gallons of ethanol annually from one facility: Pacific Ethanol (Alto Ingredients) in Boardman.

State Incentives

The Oregon Clean Fuels Program requires 10% carbon intensity reduction by 2025, 20% by 2030, and 37% by 2035. However, ethanol's share of credit generation dropped from 62% in 2016 to just 18% in 2024 as electric vehicles captured more of the market.

Where to Find E85

Jay's Garage in Portland is often cited as the only E85 station in the entire Portland metro. Olson Brothers near Milwaukie offers E85 at lower prices. Additional stations exist in Aurora and Boardman. No major chain has committed to Oregon E85.

Coverage Gaps

The entire state outside Portland is essentially an E85 desert. Southern Oregon/Medford, Central and Eastern Oregon, and the Oregon Coast all lack E85. I-5 south of Salem is problematic for FFV travel.

Pricing Context

West Coast E85 pricing shows one of the best regional discounts—$1.64/gallon less than gasoline according to recent data. However, base prices remain high ($3.84-$4.50/gallon).

Practical Tips

Portland is your only reliable E85 zone. If traveling south, consider California's 588 stations as backup. For any road trip, top off in Portland and plan gas stops for regular unleaded.
