Michigan boasts 256 E85 stations, ranking among the nation's strongest networks despite producing relatively little ethanol itself. The secret? Detroit. Being home to GM, Ford, and Stellantis created natural demand for the fuel their flex fuel vehicles could use.
American automakers mass-produced flex fuel vehicles partly due to CAFE fuel economy credits. By 2008, the Detroit Three pledged to make 50% of their vehicles flex fuel capable. Michigan ended up with one of the largest concentrations of GM FFVs in the country—over 140,000 vehicles.
Michigan produces approximately 238 million gallons of ethanol annually from two major plants: POET Bioprocessing in Caro (72 million gallons/year) and Carbon Green BioEnergy in Lake Odessa (50-60 million gallons/year).
In 2006, GM partnered directly with Meijer and the State of Michigan to install E85 pumps across the state. The Yellow Hose Program features 29 Michigan stations pledging E85 at least $1 below regular gasoline.
Meijer gas stations remain the most reliable E85 source, with locations across the Lower Peninsula. Speedway offers E85 at select locations in metro Detroit. Coverage is strongest in metro Detroit along I-94 and I-75, with good availability in Grand Rapids, Lansing, and the Thumb region.
Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula have very limited access—plan accordingly for trips north of Bay City.
E85 typically runs $1.00+ cheaper per gallon than regular in Michigan. Use E85Prices.com or GasBuddy to find real-time pricing. Look for Yellow Hose participating stations for best value.
When heading north, fill up in the Lower Peninsula—the UP has essentially no E85 infrastructure. Meijer locations are your most reliable source statewide.
